Have you ever wondered why bees chose hexagons as their basic building unit instead of rectangles? Or triangles? It turns out this isn’t a random decision, but one based on math! Bees use their comb to store honey and to raise bees and they need to be able to build their comb with minimal effort. As it turns out, the hexagon happens to be the best shape for this, allowing the bees to use the smallest amount of wax and get the most storage out of their space.
Don’t believe me? Here’s a fun video and an article about bees and their passion for math!
