Hi Folks,
I mentioned Lilia Walsh, Human Geography student at the University of Cincinnati, is conducting a beekeeping research project about urban beekeepers. Bob Redmond, Jason Tatro and myself were able to meet with her on her trip out to the Puget Sound earlier this month and talk about urban beekeeping. She has asked that we take a survey and send it to her.
Hello Beekeepers!
Thank you in advance for being a part of this research. My name is Lilia Walsh and I am a human geography student at the University of Cincinnati, in Ohio. I am studying the geography of beekeeping for my thesis, with a focus on urban hobby and part time beekeepers.
I really appreciate that you have taken an interest in this survey, and you can find step-by-step instructions for how to complete it below.
How do I complete the survey?
1. Download the survey from the attachment in the email.
2. Save the file to your desktop and work from this copy.
This file is a word doc file and it can not give a virus to your computer.
3. Fill in your answers. Indicate your answers to the multiple-choice questions by highlighting, bolding, or changing the font of your answer. Anything is fine as long as it is clear which you have chosen.
4. Email the answered survey as an attachment to beekeepingsurvey@gmail.com.
What if I do not want to, or cannot complete the survey by email and would rather answer on a printed copy?
1. If you can print the survey, print out a copy and write your answers on it directly.
2. If you cannot print it, please send a request to:
Bee Survey at the Department of Geography
401 Braunstein Hall
University of Cincinnati
Cincinnati, OH 45221-0131
Stating your desire to receive a copy of the survey through mail.
2. When you have completed survey, please mail it to the address below and include your mailing address so that I can send you $1.00 to reimburse you for your postage costs.

What should I do if I know other beekeepers who would be interested in taking this survey?
1. Please forward this original email, with the attached blank survey to anyone else who may be interested in completing it. I would appreciate as many completed surveys as I can collect.
2. Additionally, you may send an email to beekeepingsurvey@gmail.com including the names and emails of others who may be interested and I can email them directly.
Why do you ask personal and demographic type questions?
I am looking at beekeeping as a movement and social activity, thus it is important to see what type of people make up the beekeeping population, and what motivates their interest in beekeeping.
Additionally, the questions on name, age and ethnicity are used for the purposes of keeping the surveys straight once completed, finding demographic statistics on the nature of beekeepers in this area, and used if I need to ask you any follow up questions, I can contact you. Your name will never be made public along with your answers or addresses.
Please note that the personal information is submitted voluntarily. If you would not feel comfortable submitting your hive locations for mapping purposes, or any demographic questions, please do not answer those questions.
Will my answers ever be used in publications or articles?
Some of your typed answers may be quoted in my final paper or article. If you would prefer that this quotation be anonymous, please make a note of that at the top of your survey. Your name will NEVER be used.
What if I can’t answer a question?
If you feel that a question does not apply to you, feel free to skip it, but try to answer as many questions as you can. If possible, make a note as to why it does not apply to you.
I appreciate the time you are taking to fill out this survey and I thank you very much.

Bob Redmond is leading our next apiary work party on May 14, 2-4pm. The focus will be checking up on new packages, which presumably will have been installed the week prior. People should bring a veil and gloves if they use them. If packages are delayed, we’ll adjust the agenda.
Interested folks should contact Bob at bob@urbanbee.com or 206-786-5715.
The Bee Informed Partnership, a joint project among numerous universities and laboratories, needs your help and is asking you to please participate in two surveys. Both surveys are open only from April 1 through April 18 2011.
The purpose of the Bee Informed Partnership is to use beekeepers’ real world experiences to help solve beekeepers’ real world problems. We will use the data generated from these two surveys to help you decide which management practices are best for beekeepers like you, who live where you do and have operations similar to yours. For this to work, we need as many participants as possible…so please take the time to fill out the questionnaire and SEND THIS EMAIL TO ALL THE BEEKEEPERS YOU KNOW asking them to fill out these questionnaires too.
Please take 20 minutes out of your busy day to complete these two surveys.

Lilia Walsh, a human geography student at the University of Cincinnati, is doing her thesis on urban beekeeping. She will be collecting quantitative and qualitative data through a questionnaire that she wrote and hopes to have it filled out by 100+ urban beekeepers from around the country. Additionally, she wants to meet and photograph beekeepers and their hives.
Lilia will be in the Seattle area from April 6-April 16. If interested, please contact her at walsh.lilia@gmail.com.
Join North Cascades Institute at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center April 9–10 for an evening exploring apiculture, or beekeeping, one of the oldest forms of food production known to humankind. Join local beekeepers and gardeners Darren Gordon and Pam Woods on an educational journey into the fascinating world of bees, pollination, honey and hives. We’ll learn about the practice of Natural Beekeeping, a movement that abandons chemicals and begins to address the problems of Colony Collapse Disorder. Darren and Pam run a business providing seeds and advice to growers interested in attracting more bees to their gardens, orchards and apiaries, so they’ll also discuss how to create more natural habitat for native bees and honeybees.
For this presentation, our chef will create a special multi-course meal created to showcase local organic honey, and we’ll partake in libations from Honey Moon Mead Company in Bellingham. Your $125 ticket includes a casual gourmet dinner featuring locally-grown foods, a unique presentation by our speaker, overnight accommodations in our guest lodges, breakfast and a naturalist-led morning activity. Register online at www.ncascades.org/speakerseries or by calling (360) 854-2599.
Whether you are an avid bee enthusiast or considering taking up beekeeping as a hobby, this evening is sure to be sweet!
